OK, so you've had a look at the field and no doubt a couple of players have caught your eye -but why should you back them on the spread rather than the outright win odds?
a) If you back them to win and they don't -then you get absolutely nothing back! With the spread market, there are rewards right down to eighth place!
b) Again, one advantage of betting on the spread market is that you can get out at any time. Let's say that the French striker Henry scores a hatrick in France's first match against Romania, his spread would rise from 10-13 to around 30-33 -giving you a 20 point profit. If you think that France may then lose to Italy and Holland, you would have the chance to get out with that big fat profit.
c) With that example in mind, think about the team's chances. Your man may be a great goalscorer, but if his team goes out in the group stages, then he can't add to his total.
So when choosing a player like van Nistelrooy, you have to wonder whether Holland will progress to the knockout stage.
d) A couple of other factors are whether your man is the lone striker or one of a pair -also, does he take the free kicks and penalties? .
